What We're Reading on Monday, May 5, 2025

Our region is impacted by local, state, federal, and global decisions directly. Some decisions impact us indirectly, like those made around climate change adaptation and mitigation. Here are some articles we're reading and podcasts we're listening to this week to get our heads around these issues and impacts.

Keeping up with the news can feel like a lot. Recently, a few stories have caught our attention.

This opinion piece from CommonWealth Beacon:

"THE UPHEAVAL of federal support for climate change work could not have come at a worse time.  Communities across Massachusetts and the US are generally under-prepared to handle the current impacts of climate change, let alone the far greater challenges projected for the years ahead."

and this insight into how global tariffs and trade disruptions could alter the oyster industry from Filter Feed on Substack:

"While some consider the situation a temporary disruption — noting the chaotic implementation in which tariffs were announced, delayed, deployed, and suspended again — others suggest this could fundamentally alter how the oyster business operates long-term."

We're also listening to this recording of The Point with Mindy Todd with Cape Cod Chamber CEO Paul Niedzwiecki about Cape Codders' options in the face of changing climate.

Here's the podcast overview: "The Trump administration is dismantling key actions of the federal government designed to address climate Change. However, there is still much we can do as individuals and on a regional level to curb carbon emissions and become more resilient to a changing climate. On The Point, we talk with Madison Sheppard, young adult climate activist, and Dan Wolf and Paul Niedzwiecki of the Cape Cod Climate Change Collaborative about the path forward. Mindy Todd hosts."
