ResilientWoodsHole (RWH) is a private-public organization collaboration between science institutions (including Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Marine Biological Laboratory, and NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries), local businesses, residents, and other stakeholders.
Beginning in 2019, RWH has worked diligently on a plan that will incorporate nature-based solutions, protection, maintenance of existing infrastructure, and lateral and/or vertical relocation to address rising sea levels.
Being that Woods Hole is home to countless researchers who study climate change issues such rising sea levels and coastal resiliency, the RWH collectively has beyond the necessary expertise in such areas of concern that essential to combating the climate crisis.
In addition to raising awareness for how climate change has affected Woods Hole, the RWH also aims to lead by example, exemplifying how private institutions and community members can, too, lead the charge to do their part in supporting awareness or directly combating the climate crisis.
This walking trail's intention is to highlight the vulnerabilities of Woods Hole Village to rising sea level and coastal storm flooding, discuss town and institution climate resilience planning, and incorporate some adaptative solutions to help protect Woods Hole from these climate-related impacts.
The self-guided tour also includes discussion between the leaders in the RWH partner organizations and Woods Hole Village community members regarding their first-hand experiences with climate change and climate resilience projects that are currently underway in the Village. Additionally, this tour includes a brief history of Woods Hole Village and comparison between current and historic images of the surrounding areas.
